The family D'Arcy from Galway is one of those 14 families that the Tribes of Galway ( English Tribes of Galway ) are called, and for centuries the city and region in the Irish County Galway dominated. The D'Arcy are a French family who hailed from the Chateau D'Arcie near Paris , which later belonged to the Semur family. They must not be confused with the Darcy, which are of Gaelic origin. Norman D'Arcy came to England with William the Conqueror . In the 14th century his descendants settled in Ireland where the family became one of the most powerful in Galway City.

The family is mentioned in the annals of the Kingdom of England and France. Their descent is derived from David D'Arcy. His son Christopher died in one of the crusades in Palestine . From him comes Sir John D'Arcy , who was appointed Judge of Ireland by Edward II in 1323. He married Jane, one of the five daughters of Richard Og de Burgh, 2nd Earl of Ulster . The Irish D'Arcies go back to this connection.

The Galway family is descended from James D'Arcy Riveagh, who had considerable influence during the reign of Elizabeth I. The D'Arcy families in Kiltullagh and Newforest, County Galway, and the families in Gorteen and Houndswood, County Mayo, descended from him.

The family's descendants still reside in and around Galway and County Mayo .

A roundabout in Galway is named after the family.
