The DIN standard DIN 2345 was a quality standard for translation jobs .

The DIN German Institute for Standardization e. In 1996, V. published a new quality standard for the translation industry, DIN 2345. It was valid, with an update in April 1998, until the end of 2006. Then it was withdrawn without replacement and replaced by EN 15038 until it was replaced by ISO 17100 in 2016. These are standards that regulate the quality of translations and cooperation between the client and the contractor.

The translation standard DIN 2345 gave translators and translation agencies the opportunity to declare on their own responsibility that the services they provide are based on a legal basis.

The requirements specified in the standard related to the selection of the translator, the cooperation between those involved in the translation order, the documentation accompanying the process, the source text, the target text and the checking of translations.

The service providers had the opportunity to be certified. This standardized the previously different criteria that were used as a benchmark in every office.

The DIN 2345 standard consisted of seven chapters that describe the scope, terms used, process organization and the process of checking the translation.

  1. Area of ​​application: DIN 2345 stipulates the requirements for translation jobs, which relate to the following points: source text, cooperation between the parties involved, selection of the translator, process organization, target text, checking of translations
  2. Normative references: Reference to other standards that determine how to e.g. B. cited correctly , created and maintained glossaries or structured documents.
  3. Definition of general terms: In this chapter, technical terms such as language, reference text, text, native language and technical language competence or translation were defined.
  4. Process organization: The chapter "Process organization" was divided into the following sections:
    1. Selection of suitable translators
    2. Organizational features (request, offer, deadline, delivery date, price, review of the translation by another translator, confidentiality, naming of the translator's name),
    3. Content characteristics (text function and target group, language variants, adaptation to the target culture),
    4. Support from the client,
    5. Forwarding and distribution of the translation
  5. Source text and target text: dealing with errors in the source text, completeness of the target text, linguistic design and the creation of new terminologies that do not yet exist in the target language.
  6. Checking the translation: The translation should be checked for:
    1. completeness
    2. correctness of content and terminology
    3. Spelling and Grammar
    4. Use of language and compliance with the agreement with the client
  7. Declaration by the translator: The translator declares on his own responsibility that his translations are made on the basis of DIN 2345. He can apply for registration through DIN CERTCO.

criticism

When it was published in 1998, DIN 2345 did not offer any fundamental innovations for professional translators and translation service providers. Rather, their importance lay in providing criteria for the selection of qualified translators, requirements for cooperation between the client, translation service provider and translator, aspects of the translators' information needs (section "Client support") and suggestions for the project documentation in a reference document that now all those involved could refer to mutual security.
