DIRI compound

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A diri compound is used to describe a logogram in the Sumerian language when it is composed of two or more characters that together result in a new reading. The term diri compound is modern and is named after the prime example of the logogram diri , cf. Table with examples.

Thanks to the use of diri compound words, a separate logogram was not necessary for every Sumerian term, which on the one hand simplified the script, but on the other hand required the reader to recognize the diri compound .
