from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

DMZ is a comic series createdby author Brian Wood and illustrator Riccardo Burchielli , which was published by Vertigo in 2006. The series ended in 2012 with issue 72. The German-language issue has been published by Panini Comicssince June 2007.

background

In the near future, a second civil war will break out in America, in which the United States of America (mainly coastal metropolises) and the so-called Free States of America (originating in the Midwest) are hostile to each other. After some time, the fighting in New York City comes to a standstill, but without a peace agreement. Manhattan is largely evacuated and declared a demilitarized zone (DMZ for short) and degenerates into a no-man's-land controlled by rival gangs and militias.

As part of an internship, the budding photojournalist Matthew Roth is given the opportunity to assist the experienced war correspondent Viktor Ferguson with a report on the DMZ and the remaining civilian population, and sets off with him and a military escort in a helicopter towards Manhattan. Shortly after arriving in the target area, the journalists and the soldiers responsible for their protection come under fire. As a result, Roth is separated from the group and some of the soldiers securing the landing site are killed immediately. Ferguson and the remaining soldiers try to escape by helicopter, but are shot down and pronounced dead.

Roth escapes and meets Zee, a former medical student and DMZ resident, who saves his life and informs him about the conditions in the demilitarized zone. After these events, Roth initially wants to be evacuated from the DMZ by the US armed forces, but eventually changes his mind to be the only reporter on site to report on the situation.

concept

The series covers issues such as abuse of power, war crimes, the manipulation of public opinion through one-sided media coverage, the machinations of war profiteers and the suffering of civilians in war zones in their attempt to lead a reasonably normal life.

In the course of the further action of the series, the protagonist Roth learns more about the lives of the people trapped in the DMZ and is drawn into the power struggles of the various interest groups.

Flashbacks tell more about the circumstances that led to the civil war and the backstories of some of the supporting characters are presented to the reader.

Collective editions

In addition to the total of 72 issues, there is also a collective edition, as is usual for the American market, which includes around 5 issues as a "trade paperback". The counting of the table follows the American original; the different compilation of the German edition, in which volumes eight and nine are divided into three volumes, is listed in brackets.
