DOS emulator
DOS emulators are used to use mostly older DOS programs and games under more modern operating systems such as Microsoft Windows or Linux . For this purpose, DOS hardware and / or software is emulated so that the DOS program finds an environment that is as compatible as possible with real DOS.
Some operating systems, such as Windows NT- based versions of Windows and OS / 2, include DOS emulators by default. The DOS emulator under Windows is called Virtual DOS Machine (VDM) , two other well-known emulators are DOSBox and DOSEMU . DOSBox emulates an entire PC, while with DOSEMU the programs run on the real CPU of the computer under a real DOS and only the hardware environment is emulated. The DOS emulators in Windows and OS / 2 also fall into the DOSEMU category.
