DOSEMU (from DOS Emulation) is a DOS emulator for Linux . The project is under the GPL and is therefore free software . The first version (0.1) was released on September 3, 1992.

With DOSEMU the processor is not emulated, but the DOS programs run on the real processor of the PC. This is faster than the DOSBox method , but less controllable (e.g. old games can run too quickly with DOSEMU, which can be remedied with DOSBox by setting the speed) and initially only worked on computers with x86 -compatible CPUs .

A DOS operating system is required for DOSEMU, whereby FreeDOS , which is also free , is usually used. DOSEMU only provides the environment, so it is not possible to run DOS programs without an MS-DOS -compatible operating system.

From version 1.4.0 onwards, DOSEMU contains a complete CPU emulation that is used if the CPU cannot use VM86 mode (because it runs in 64-bit mode) or if support for VM86 mode in Linux Kernel has been disabled.
