Franking ( D aten- V elaboration -Freimachung ) is a way for the electronic payment of postal charges for large customers.

variants

With the digital franking, all posting documents, the payment statement and the dispatch schedule are created electronically at the same time. Because the Deutsche Post AG (DPAG) has the least effort with IT-franked letters, the highest discount on postage can be achieved with this method.

The IT franking line is also printed in the address window of the letter. In the Deutsche Post division, there are exact specifications for the location, size and components of the IT franking line. The use of the DataMatrix code is mandatory for new IT franking customers . The IT franking is identified by the letters "DV" and contains the month and year of sending as well as a unique consignment number. IT franking can be combined with Premiumadress and additional services such as registered mail, whereby the data required for the additional service is then no longer required as a barcode but can be integrated into the QR code.

Advantages of IT franking

Since the IT franking is printed on the letter, several work steps are saved. In contrast to the franking machine , where the user has to buy postage in advance, which is then gradually printed down, if DPAG uses IT franking, the postage is only debited after dispatch. Depreciation, service fees and, in some cases, very substantial costs for consumables (ink) for the franking machine are saved.

Realization of IT franking

Only those who have signed a separate IT franking agreement can participate in DPAG's IT franking. If this is available, IT franking can be implemented with special software. For this purpose, DPAG has awarded four software companies a general certification for their solution. These are recommended by DPAG. Nevertheless, the address window is additionally certified once per customer by a specialist advisor from DPAG. IT franking can then be put into operation.

The modernized IT franking procedure is carried out using a data matrix code, which contains all the necessary information in the smallest of spaces in the small square imprint in the address field to the right of the address; no additional imprints or details are required besides the recipient details.

Alternative postal service providers

The type of electronic franking via a data matrix code is increasingly being adopted by alternative postal service providers and also offered to senders of small quantities of letters in a different form, e.g. B. Internet brand . With the DataMatrix code, the postal service provider has the option of securely documenting the path of the individual letter from the sender to the recipient ( shipment tracking ). This is currently only offered by alternative mail service providers. However, this is only useful if the software solution used can also assign a content to the envelope. A requirement on the software must therefore be the creation of a parts list for each envelope. It is thus possible to provide evidence of the dispatch route of a specific letter.
