The Dadong Center for Art and Culture ( Chinese 大 東 文化 藝術 中心 , Pinyin Dàdōng Wénhuà Yìshù Zhōngxīn ) is located in the Fengshan District of Kaohsiung City in southern Taiwan . It is named after the Dadong Elementary School on whose grounds the center is located.
Location and building history
The Dadong Center covers an area of 4.3 hectares. Among the architects who applied to carry out the construction were the Taiwanese architects Malone Chang and Chen Yu-lin and the Dutch architecture firm Cie. selected and commissioned with the planning. The construction work lasted from December 5, 2008 to March 23, 2012. The most striking feature of the facility is its roof construction, which consists of eleven elements made of heat-resistant, light and air-permeable material, the appearance of which is reminiscent of the lower part of hot air balloons.
On March 23, 2012, the center was officially inaugurated with a performance by the children's theater Paper Windmill .
use
The Dadong Center comprises an event hall that can be combined with an open-air stage (total of 800 seats), an exhibition hall, an education center and a three-story art library with a focus on children's and youth literature. The center is designed as a multifunctional area for various events and is also intended to be a place of education for children and young people. This is also reflected in the close connection between the center and the Dadong Elementary School, which focuses on aesthetic education.
