Dadophorus of Salamis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dadophorus von Salamis , allegedly a late antique (5th / 6th century) priest and author of liturgical texts, is a fictional author listed in the Lexicon of Ancient Christian Literature (LACL). It is a bogus lexicon article . A person with the descriptive name M. Lampe was named as the author of the bogus lexicon entry , who is not listed in the lexicon employee directory.

It is said that Dadophorus, born the son of a candle maker, emerged as the author of important liturgical texts and tracts. This includes, among other things, a book about the pagan torch-bearer festival Dadophoria, which is also fictional. Light and candle metaphors are characteristic of his work. His writing Laus cerei (literally: praise of the candle ) became well known in the Middle Ages.

Dadophoros ( Δᾳδοφόρος ) means “torchbearer” in Greek. The term was used in various contexts in antiquity, including in relation to Mithras torchbearers .
