The Dahlgrenkanonen were ship guns that were cast as solid cylinders from cast iron and were then given their shape by drilling and turning. They were used shortly before and during the American Civil War.

The design was submitted by the head of the US gun system and later Rear Admiral John Adolphus Bernard Dahlgren . The Dahlgren cannons were also used during the war. Because of their peculiar shape, reminiscent of a beer bottle, they were jokingly called bottle cannons .
