The Daihōon-ji ( Japanese 大 報恩寺 ) with the mountain name Zuiō-zan ( 瑞 応 山 ), also called Senbon-Shakadō ( 千 本 釈 迦 堂 ), is a temple of the Shingon direction of Buddhism. The temple is located in Kamigyō-ku , Kyōto and is the 16th temple on the New Saigoku Pilgrimage .
history
In a report in "Hantōkō" ( 半 陶 藳 ) it is said that Ganko ( 岸 高 ), a follower of Fujiwara no Mitsutaka ( 藤原 光 隆 ), also known as “Nekoma Chūnagon” ( 猫 間 中 納 言 ), had priest Gikū ( 義空 ) caused this temple to be built in 1221. Gikū was a grandson of Fujiwara no Hidehira ( 藤原 秀 衡 ; 1096–1187), who ruled northern Japan at the end of the Heian period .
investment
The main hall ( 本 堂 Hondō ) was built in the Shichū style ( 四柱 造 ) in 1221 and has survived the destruction during the various wars between the nobles as a major exception. It has six columns on the front of 19.53 m and five columns in the depth of 23.19 m, is single-storey, has a hipped roof, which is covered with cypress bark ( 檜 皮 葺 Hiwada-buki ). The building has lattice doors ( 蔀 戸 Shitomi-do ) and sliding doors ( 引 き 違 い 格子 戸 Hikichigai kōshi-do ) and is therefore more like a residence than a temple from the Heian period . The main hall is registered as a national treasure.
