Dalquharran Castle

Dalquharran Castle , also Dalquarran Castle or Dalquharran House , is the ruin of a manor house near the Scottish village of Dailly in the Council Area South Ayrshire . It is located about 300 m northwest of Old Dalquharran Castle near the north bank of the Water of Girvan . The village of Dailly is around 400 m south. In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

During the 15th century, Laird Gilbert Kennedy built the nearby Tower House, now known as Old Dalquharran Castle . This was expanded into a castle in the 1670s. In 1780, Thomas Kennedy commissioned the Scottish architect Robert Adam to design a mansion. On the basis of records it can be understood that the design was significantly changed several times during the construction period. The building that was ultimately built is much more simply designed than originally planned. It may not have been completed until after Adam's death in 1792. Another grand piano was added in the 1880s. After Dalquharran Castle was completed, the old castle was gradually abandoned.

Today Dalquharran Castle is only preserved as a ruin. The roof has collapsed and the interior largely destroyed. In 1990 the building was inscribed on the Scotland List of Endangered Structures. Since then there have been plans to restore the manor house. It is to be converted into a golf hotel. Neither the restoration nor the construction of the golf course has been carried out so far.
