Old Dalquharran Castle

Old Dalquharran Castle is a ruined castle near the Scottish village of Dailly in the Council Area South Ayrshire . The facility is classified as a Scheduled Monument .

history

The earliest mention of Dalquharran Castle is in a charter from Crossraguel Abbey . It dates from 1474. Originally it was a tower house of the laird Gilbert Kennedy . In the 1670s the building was extensively expanded into a castle. Around the time it was built, an avenue leading to the Dalquharran Castle from the 1790s was set up. In the following century, the newer building was increasingly used. Old Dalquharran Castle was probably used until at least 1904. Today it is only preserved as a ruin.

description

The castle occupies a defensible position on the north bank of the Water of Girvan around 100 m north of Dailly. The original Tower House had a footprint of 18 m × 2 m. The masonry is almost two meters thick. By 1679, Old Dalquharran Castle was expanded into a palace. This is crenellated and a Tourelle protrudes on the northwest side.
