Issue 110 of Das Magazin , October 1933

The magazine was a German-language general - interest magazine with a focus on culture and lifestyle. It appeared monthly from 1924 to 1941.

Franz Wolfgang Koebner launched the magazine in October 1924 based on the American model. The editor in charge was Hubert Miketta . The publisher was called Verlag Das Magazin Robert Siodmak , Berlin, later Dr. Eysler & Co. , Berlin. The first article was devoted to the world's most famous dancer at the time, Anna Pavlovna Pavlova .

The magazine was considered a trendsetter in Germany in the 1920s and 1930s and stood out at the kiosk, among other things, with its colored cover images with the claim of photographic aesthetics. Like almost all magazines, the editorial staff of the magazine adapted to the requirements of the National Socialist zeitgeist. In the October 1933 edition shown, for example, the publisher advertised a portrait of Adolf Hitler : "Every German should own this picture!" In July 1941, after 203 issues , Das Magazin was forcibly discontinued “... to free people and material for other war-related purposes”.

From July 1949 Koebner as publisher and Hubert Miketta as editor-in-chief started a new edition. The Magazin Verlagsges.mbH Stuttgart – Frankfurt was founded especially for this in western Germany. The first article this time was “Mother Earth and the Nuclear War - Can our planet survive a nuclear war” by Heinz Görz . The edition only had 13 issues and had to be discontinued for economic reasons.

The magazine was the industry leader in the pre-war period, a role model also for the competition. Many other magazines in German-speaking countries were based on the Koebner magazine. Including the UHU , the Revue of the Month , the Wiener Magazin , the Schweizer Magazin , the magazine Das Leben , Scherls Magazin , the KEMagazin , the Kleine Magazin and many others. Many of these magazines went under during the early days of Nazi rule, the rest at the beginning of the war against the Soviet Union . Some editions experienced a restart after the Second World War , with sometimes very variable success, which may be due to the hardship prevailing at the time.

The East German cultural magazine Das Magazin was launched in 1954 and has been published continuously since then. The current publishing house Kurznachzehn Verlag sees its content in the tradition of Koebner magazine and communicates that it is part of a line of tradition that goes back decades. However, there is no actual publishing connection between the two editions.
