The first life of Angela M. is a biography of the historian Ralf Georg Reuth and the journalist Günther Lachmann about the German Chancellor Angela Merkel . It was published by Piper Verlag in May 2013 . The book was on the Spiegel bestseller list (hardcover non-fiction category) for 18 weeks and reached number 4 in the first week.

The two authors concentrate on the first part of Merkel's life, which she spent in the GDR . They interviewed many contemporary witnesses and conducted archival research. The authors come to the conclusion that, as a member of the country's scientific elite, she acted purposefully and in line with the system and did not only discover her political ambitions during the fall of the Berlin Wall.
