The 24 questions (up to 2005: 36 questions) of the puzzle race were published in two issues of the SZ magazine. An overall solution was to be determined from the solutions. The address to be sent also had to be determined through additional questions.

The start was usually at the beginning of August. The deadline for entries was 15 days after the first questions appeared.

The senders of the correct overall solution receive a certificate. In the last few years the number of correct total solutions was mostly between 300 and 400. Number of correct entries from 2001:

year number
2001 419
2002 362
2003 396
2004 297
year number
2005 307
2006 329
2007 310

The winner of the main prize was determined in a final in a kind of scavenger hunt .

The finalists were five participants who were drawn from among those who submitted the correct solution. The exact rules for drawing lots (e.g. preference for “early broadcasters”) varied. The fastest solver of additional Internet questions received an additional starting place in the years 1999 to 2005.

On January 28, 2008, it was announced that the puzzle race will not take place in 2008 and that the era of the puzzle race is coming to an end.
