The miner Franz and the niece of the director of the Aurora colliery , in which Franz works as a tractor, meet by chance in the miners' settlement. Franz lives there with his older sister. This encounter, which ends in an argument, leaves a lasting impression on both of them. Franz repeatedly catches himself thinking of the strange girl, and Lena, who has so far been spared the harsh reality, begins to be interested in the world of ordinary workers and thus in their needs. After another chance meeting, the reconciliation takes place and Franz and Lena meet more often, which leads to a friendship and a love. Lena clashes with her foster parents more and more often because of her social commitment and eventually moves out. She lives with an employee of a soup kitchen in which she has already helped. At the same time, a labor dispute arises at the colliery for higher wages, better working hours and the like. Ultimately, there is a strike , with the miners going out as losers, as social hardship quickly pushes them to earn money again. On one of the first working days, there was an accident at the colliery in which many miners as well as Franz and his friend Paul were buried. You survive with a lot of luck, but Franz loses his job at the colliery because the colliery director knows about the relationship between his niece and him. Franz leaves Lena to go to high school in Berlin and later to become an engineer with the hope of being able to lead a better life one day.
