Data warehouse system

Reference architecture of a data warehouse system

A data warehouse system is an information system that consists of all the components required for the data warehouse process . These are at least the data acquisition area (English staging area) , in which the data extracted from the data sources are merged and, if necessary, adjusted and transformed, and the central data warehouse database, the actual data warehouse (data warehouse). Ideally, further components are the data marts and the metadata repository , the memory for the metadata and the data warehouse manager for process control , which are required to provide area-specific or evaluation-specific views .

The data warehouse database is fed from a wide variety of internal and external data sources using the ETL process . On the basis of this integrated database, comprehensive evaluations are possible, which are usually carried out in the data marts.

The data sources and their management systems are usually not part of the data warehouse system.
