A DataPlay (also called Dataplay Disc ) is a digital storage medium introduced in 2001 that was not able to establish itself.

history

The DataPlay medium was introduced in 2001 by Dataplay Inc., a company from Boulder , Colorado , at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The disc is 39.5 mm × 33.5 mm × 3 mm and has a storage capacity of 250 MB or 500 MB. The data transfer speed is 1 MB / s. The data is stored optically like a CD . DataPlay media can only be written to once and are biometrically encrypted. Before the data can be accessed, the key must be validated. The supplier of the storage media for DataPlay was imation .

For a time, DataPlay was viewed by the music industry as a possible follow-up format to replayable audio cassettes , and Dataplay Inc.'s funding sources included Universal Music Group and Trans World Entertainment . In America, pre-recorded media and suitable playback devices were available in small quantities from August 2002. At the end of September 2002, Universal delivered the first thirteen titles on DataPlay to chain stores such as Virgin , Tower , Borders . Titles included albums by Pink , Usher and Britney Spears . In Europe, sales had not started until October 2002.

Mid October 2002 reported DataPlay Inc. bankruptcy under Chapter 11 on. The reason given by the company was a failed follow-up financing. Dataplay employed 120 people at the time. The company was later taken over by Ritek .
