Data concentrator

Data concentrator as part of a smart metering system

A data concentrator is part of a smart metering system. It monitors smart meters (=  intelligent meters ) or all connected devices such as B. electricity, gas, water and heat meters via a communication channel (e.g. Powerline A-Band) and communicates with the central system of the energy supply company (EVU), which processes the data from the meters.

This means that the data concentrator collects the data from all connected devices and sends them bundled to the central system. This bundling of the data can reduce the data transfer.

It is questionable whether this cost advantage can be recognized by the customer. The customer has to pay the energy costs for this service. The device is installed after the electricity meter and, according to the manufacturer's data sheet , requires around 5 watts of permanent power for data acquisition. This power, which at first appears low, adds up to an annual 43.8 kWh.

Reading out the collected data for test purposes, which is desirable from the consumer's point of view, is not provided for the consumer.
