Dave & Ansel Collins were a Jamaican reggae duo that enjoyed international success in the early 1970s.
Band history
Dave Barker began his music career in the 1960s as a member of The Techniques and as a studio singer in Kingston , Jamaica. With the solo recording Shocks of Mighty he had his first own hit, which was followed by other recordings.
In 1971 he teamed up with keyboardist Ansel Collins and the single Double Barrel was created . After the early reggae number with the simple piano sequence and Barker's toasting and rhythmic organ sounds became a huge hit in Jamaica, it was also released in the UK and many other countries. In the UK singles charts, the song reached number 1 , as well as in the Netherlands , Germany and the USA it was in the top 30. As a studio musician, Sly Dunbar also played the drums on the single , whose first recording it was.
The single was written and produced by Winston Riley , previously also with Techniques, who was also responsible for the second hit, Monkey Spanner . The song reached the top 10 in the UK, but international success was limited to England. This also applied to the following album, which, like the first hit, was called Double Barrel .
After that, the attempt to make Barker's hit Shocks of Mighty known as a duo beyond Jamaica failed . Further recordings were also unsuccessful.
Collins then went back to Jamaica, where he worked as a studio musician with Sly & Robbie (Sly Dunbar & Robert Shakespeare ) and many other well-known reggae artists. Dave Barker stayed in London and made more solo recordings to follow. In 1975 the album In the Ghetto was released under Dave & Ansel Collins , but it is unclear whether Collins actually participated in it. Barker later joined the band Chain Reaction and later continued to work solo, turning musically towards soul.
Double Barrel has been covered and sampled several times. Among other things, it was used in the hit Gal Wine by Chaka Demus and Pliers , which reached the top 20 in England.
The names of the two musicians cause confusion. The name Dave Barker came into being for David Crooks' solo career from 1969 onwards. The common band name Dave & Ansel Collins read like that of a pair of brothers and actually after Double Barrel some Barker singles appeared under the name Dave Collins, later returned but he went back to Barker. In addition, Collins first name "Ansil" was written on Double Barrel , later just Ansel.
