Deadlock stands for a situation in which both alternatives of a dilemma block each other or in which the partners are not prepared to compromise to solve such a situation, which makes the situation hopeless.

A deadlock in computer science describes a hopeless situation, also known as a “ deadlock ”, in which several processes block each other because they are waiting for the release of resources that another participating process has already used exclusively. Railway deadlocks are situations in which trains block each other and normal operation is no longer possible.

Buridan's donkey is a philosophical parable that illustrates a deadlock. More complicated examples are the smoking problem and the philosopher problem.
