In the middle of the night, new Chief Inspector Jane Honeywell got a call from her colleague Pete Fish. A woman's body was found on Mervin Peck's Chittleham Farm. The dead woman was Rose Carter, a part-time teacher and statistician. Rose Carter was a member of an animal welfare organization.

After some questioning, Mervin Peck admitted that he killed her. But he asserted that it was an accident. Rose Carter threatened to report him if he didn't treat his animals better. An argument broke out and she tried to fight back with an ax. Mervin Peck wanted to take it from her, but she fatally injured herself.

After Mervin made the confession, he was unexpectedly hospitalized with a strange illness. A short time later he was found murdered there. The investigation began again. And only a short time later it was clear that Mervin's brother, Jack Peck, had killed Mervin with the help of Jo Keane. He was afraid that Mervin would betray him for illegal experiments on sheep.
