Debit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The debitiv , also called neessitive or necessity form, is a verbal mode of having to . It occurs, for example, in Latvian , e.g. B. in the expression man jābūt mājās "I have to be at home"; jābūt is the special debitive form , the agent is in the dative . The use of the dative auctoris in the Latin gerundive construction is similar : mihi bibendum est “I have to drink”.

The debitiv expresses an objective necessity. So tev jādzer tēja bez cukura means “you have to drink tea without sugar” (e.g. because nobody is in the house). If there is no objective necessity, modal verbs are used.
