Dehiscence

Dehiscence refers to the opening or divergence of related tissue structures. It can be connective tissue or supporting tissue .

Examples

  • When the wound edges of a surgical suture gape open, one speaks of suture dehiscence.
  • Another example is the space stomach after an abdominal operation. The cause is often mechanical influences.
  • The abdominal muscles in physiological umbilical hernias are also dehiscent .
