Dike walkers or dike walkers are people who carry out the dike guard service during floods. Dike runners are often referred to as dike guards . If the voluntary dike guards are on the move on tugs in order to be able to monitor larger distances while mobile, they are called coast guard .

Dyke runners or dike guards check the dykes in a specified section during flooding . The scope of tasks is regulated in DIN 19712 "River dikes". They observe the dike and examine it for damage. To make it easier to find, the damaged areas are marked by the dike runners. The dike runners do not remove the damaged area.

The use of dyke walkers is regulated by laws, ordinances or disaster control plans. The use depends on the flood level and the associated degree of danger. In Brandenburg , continuous guard duty is planned from alert level III. The alarm levels are called out when the predetermined level values ​​for river sections are exceeded. As a rule, the security service is carried out around the clock by at least two people who can secure each other if necessary.
