Delay Skew

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Delay Skew - more rarely also Skew Delay - is the term used for twisted pair cables to describe the difference in the signal propagation time on different pairs.

Due to the special twisting of the twisted pair cables, the total stretched length of individual wires is different. Therefore, a signal sent at the same time arrives at the receiver on two conductors at different times. This time difference must lie within certain tolerances so that the receiver can still evaluate it as the same signal, and is max. From the Category 5e standard . 50  ns  / 100 m. With good cables, the skew delay is mostly below 20 ns / 100 m.
