Demba BT Sambou ran in the 2012 parliamentary elections as an independent candidate in the Niani constituency in the Janjanbureh Administrative Area . With 51.60% he was able to win the constituency before Ebrima Manneh (APRC) for himself.

At the end of September 2016, the members of the National Assembly requested that Demba BT Sambou be expelled from the National Assembly. Sambou did not return to The Gambia from while traveling to the United States and attending a conference in early August. Sambou was expelled from the National Assembly and the seat was not refilled.
