Demurrage (seafaring)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Demurrage (or demourage , German  "Liegegeld" ) is the remuneration of the freight forwarder to the carrier in maritime shipping if the loading or unloading time of a cargo ship agreed in the charter party is exceeded.

The amount of the demurrage is agreed between the charterer and the carrier in the respective charter party.

For faster than in the charter party agreed loading or unloading of the vessel can be a Despatch ( German  "Eilgeld" ) said compensation or Detention ( German  "late fees" ) said load to be agreed.

For a corresponding remuneration in inland navigation, see the ordinance on loading and unloading times and demurrage in inland navigation (BinSchLV).
