Monument of gratitude
The monument of gratitude in Basel is on Spalenring opposite the former rifle house on Schützenmattpark. It is a reminder of the children's aid of the Swiss Red Cross , which was created on a private initiative during the Second World War .
The monument created by the French sculptor Georges Salendre (1890–1985) honored Switzerland's humanitarian aid, in particular that of the Mulhouse-based textile manufacturer Marc Bernheim (1875–1952) and Mathilde Paravicini .
The memorial was inaugurated on June 27, 1948 and bears the inscription: A la Suisse généreuse, la France reconaissante / 1939–1945 (German translation : “The thankful France, the generous Switzerland” / 1939–1945). Numerous officials were present at the inauguration, including District President Peter Zschokke (1898–1986) and Édouard Herriot, President of the French National Assembly.
