The Department of Finance Canada ( English ) or, because of the Canadian bilingualism, also the Ministère des Finances du Canada ( French ), is the finance ministry of Canada with its seat in Ottawa . The authority was founded on July 1, 1867 and employs around 1000 people.

The authority reports to the Canadian finance minister, currently Bill Morneau . The agency's functions are to ensure a healthy Canadian economy . The tasks of the authority include: The control of tax, customs, currency and economic policy, the production of money and the supervision of compliance with the law. The Treasury Secretary is the chief economic adviser to the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau and is responsible for national and international financial and tax policies of Canada. He oversees the finances of the Canadian government and the financial authorities.
