from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The donkey and the little dog (French: L'Âne et le Petit Chien) is the 5th fable from the fourth book of the Fables Choisies collection , Mises En Vers by Jean de La Fontaine .

L'Âne et le Petit Chien

Unlike many fables, it begins with a moral prefix :

Let's not force our talent, we wouldn't do anything with grace. Whatever he does can never pass as gallant.

The following story tells: A donkey observes how his master always caresses his little dog when it runs its paws over the face of the master. The donkey, which is otherwise driven only by caning to work, comes to the realization that there must be an easy matter, also from the Lord pats to get if he do the same as it the little dogs. But when he hits the gentleman with his hooves in the face, he receives a rough beating.
