The goldsmith and the thief
The Goldsmith and the Thief is a children's and youth novel by Tonke Dragt .
The story tells of the twin brothers Jiacomo and Laurenzo, who look very similar but are completely different in character. The two are inseparable until their parents' death, but then go different ways. Laurenzo learns the craft of a goldsmith, while Jiacomo is apprenticed to a master thief. Until they meet again after a year, there are many adventures and stories of confusion that ultimately lead to the two becoming the kings of Tirania .
The original edition was published in 1961 under the title Verhalen van de tweelingbroers: vrij naar Babinase balladen . The first German edition, which was translated from Dutch by Liesel Linn , appeared in 1986 by the Verlag Freies Geistesleben ( ISBN 3-7725-0856-1 ), which is still selling it in its third edition (2001) today. Another edition was published by Beltz-Verlag in 2001 , the updated, second edition of which dates from 2006. ( ISBN 3-407-78937-8 ). In addition, a five-hour audio book read by Konstantin Graudus was published in 2006.
Reception history
Due to the moral claim of the book, which promotes tolerance and acceptance of otherness, it has been included in curricula and libraries by various schools. In addition, the Diocese of Linz recommends the work.
