Canoeing was the bulletin of the German Canoeing Association (DKSV) in the "German Gymnastics and Sports Association" of the GDR. Its first issue appeared in December 1953. The magazine succeeded the magazine “Wassersport. Journal for Watersports of the German Democratic Republic ”, which was published jointly by the rowing, canoeing, sailing and FDJ sections, was published monthly in Berlin between January 1952 and April 1953 and wrote for all three branches of sport. The name of the paper was based on the pre-war title of the Kanu-Sport magazine published by the German Canoe Association (DKV) , which was initially continued under the name Kanusport-Nachrichten after the war in the Federal Republic and only from 1957 again under the similar one Title has been published.

The subtitle of "Der Kanu-Sport" changed over the years: up to 1958 "Information sheet of the Canoe Section of the German Democratic Republic", 1959-61 "Organ of the German Canoe Sports Association in the German Gymnastics and Sports Association", 1962-67 "Bulletin of the German Canoe Sports Association in the German Gymnastics and Sport Federation", 1968–90 "Bulletin of the German Canoe Sports Association of the German Democratic Republic".

The place of publication was Dresden until 1959, at the latest from 1961 Berlin (East). Between the numbers Jan./Febr. In 1970 and January 1971 there was a pause “due to various changes in the composition of the editorial team and various technical difficulties”. The years 1963–1965 were in A5 format, otherwise the magazine stayed on A4 with varying numbers of pages. In the early years Paul Anger took over the post of responsible editor, after a quick change in the 1950s from 1963–69 Hans Wittig, 1969–1970 Hans-Jürgen Lotsch was responsible editor; Rainer Lotsch held this position from 1971–90.

"Der Kanu-Sport" was mainly dedicated to competitive sport, but in the 1950s and 1960s also published numerous reports on canoeing , primarily on the rivers of the GDR , but also from Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. In some editions articles appeared on marginal topics (correct paddling style, sports medicine, boat tinkering, etc.) With the restructuring of the magazine in 1971, the proportion of competition reports increased sharply, mixed with party-political comments and statements. For years, trip reports only appeared sporadically, and for a long time not at all. it was not until the 1980s that the proportion of trip reports increased again. The (not technical printing, but) artistic quality of the black and white photos of this phase, among others by Ferdinand Schimandl, should be emphasized.

The magazine was last published in June 1990, three quarters of a year before the merger of the DKSV and DKV, which took place on the German Canoe Day on April 21, 1991 (not in August 1990, like the leading article in the DKV magazine “Kanusport” 9/1990, p. 79 , suggests). "The financial situation of our association before the merger with the DKV and the decreasing number of readers force us to take this step." From September 1990, the subscribers were supplied with the West German counterpart canoeing.
