The lion and the frog

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The lion and the frog is a fairy tale . In the children's and house tales of the Brothers Grimm it was only in the second part of the first edition from 1815 (since no. 43) in place 129 (KHM 129a).

content

The son and daughter of a royal couple love each other very much. When the son does not come home from the hunt, the daughter looks for him and, exhausted, meets a friendly lion who carries her through a dark cave into a garden with a palace. She is to serve the lion in order to get her brother back. When she was walking around the garden sadly, she saw a tree frog on an island in a pond with a rose petal on its head, which promised to help her. When the lion asks for a mosquito cake, the frog bakes one. She should cut off the head of the sleeping lion. When she does that, her brother and his lover, who was the frog, are redeemed.

Origin and comparisons

The magic tale comes from Elisabeth Catharina Ludovica Magdalena Jordis . Cf. KHM 88 The singing, jumping little lion , for redemption by cutting off the head and the like. a. KHM 57 The golden bird .
