The Shadow Prince is a fantasy novel by David Gemmell . It was published in Germany in 1994 . It was the second book Gemmell published. His first novel, entitled Die Legende , was published in England a year earlier, but in Germany in the same year. The book is set in the same fictional world as The Legend , the world of the Drenai . Still, the novel is no ordinary sequel, as both books are set a hundred years apart. Both works are part of the eleven volumes of the novel series The Drenai Saga (Drenai) . The main characters of The Legend have long been dead and play only a minor role or are only mentioned in The Shadow Prince. This sets a precedent for the entire Drenai series, as few characters appear in more than one novel. The plot gaps between the novels usually span centuries to give the series such an epic and historical flair. The shadow prince describes the rise of Tenaka Khan , the second club of the Nadir .

action

The shadow prince is set a century after the legend . The Drenai now live under the rule of the mad Emperor Ceska . The latter has an army of so-called "bastards" which he uses as warriors to secure his power. The "bastards" are advertising beasts that are created through a magical union of animals and humans. In addition, he is supported by the dark Templars , warrior priests without equal opponents.

Ceska's archenemy is the Nadir half-blood Tenaka Khan, who is also the great-grandson of Regnak , the bronze count , and Ulric , the first association of the Nadir tribes. The young Tenaka initially grew up with the Nadir tribe of the wolf skulls , but was not accepted there due to his ancestry and was finally sent by his grandfather Jongir to the Drenai, his father's people. In the Drenai fortress Dros Delnoch he experiences just as much distrust and rejection until one day he saves the heir of the bronze armor from assassins. Tenaka Khan eventually becomes a member of the Dragon , the Drenai's elite army.

Years later, Tenaka Khan lives abroad and learns from a messenger that the dragon was smashed by Emperor Ceska. On his return he meets young Renya , a bastard girl who, unlike the other advertising beasts, appears superficially human. Tenaka treats her harshly and dismissively at first, but later falls in love with her.

Later Tenaka goes to the Nadir tribes to ask for support against Ceska. Little remains of the former unity of the tribes. Tenaka must even find its own tribe of wolf skulls divided and divided. However, Tenaka kills his enemy cousins and eventually rises to become the leader of the Wolf Skulls himself.

With the support of the wolf skull, Tenaka Khan succeeds in defeating Ceska together with his friend Ananais , the warrior Decado and his other cousin Steiger . Since Tenaka feels obliged to his friends, he refrains from taking control of the Drenai as the new Khan of the Nadir and victor over Ceska and gives them the opportunity to establish a new republic. He withdrew into the steppe with his nadir and, like his ancestor Ulric, reunited the nadir in numerous civil wars. Renya stays with him as his partner and gives him three sons. When she dies ten years after Ceska's defeat, giving birth to their only daughter, Tenaka and his army set out for the land of the Drenai; this time with the aim to conquer the country.
