DER SOLDAT was the only military and security policy specialist medium in newspaper format in Austria and appeared 24 times a year. DER SOLDAT provided information on relevant topics of Austrian and international defense and security policy. Current reports, in-depth analyzes and opinions on specialist topics were offered. The target audience of this specialist publication were experts, decision-makers and opinion leaders in the Austrian Armed Forces , in politics, business, media and society. In industry in the security and defense sector, it represented an information medium and a communication platform.

The newspaper was published from 1956 in close cooperation with the Federal Ministry for National Defense and Sport .

In December 2014 it became known that the Austrian Ministry of Defense had canceled all 7,200 subscriptions to the magazine in order to save 225,000 euros per year. In addition, with around 80,000 to 90,000 euros annually, the armed forces were among the magazine's largest advertisers, and the expenses for these advertisements were also canceled.

The magazine was discontinued after 1409 issues and 58 years with issue 24/2014 on December 17, 2014.
