The animal tale is about a sparrow , a mouse and a pancake who found each other after the mouse escaped from the cat, the pancake made its way out of the pan and the sparrow flew up from the field. They live together peacefully for a long time in a house on the edge of the forest. Each of them takes on certain but always the same tasks in their household every day. The little mouse gets wood and chops it up to make a fire. The pancake takes over the cooking of the edible brought by the sparrow.

One day the sparrow notices that he is out all day to get food, while his housemates are obviously only busy with their chores for a short time during the day, and the rest of the time they lie lazily at the stove or look after themselves . He decides to swap tasks. After Mäuschen and Pancakes saw that the sparrow could not be changed, they agree.

The next day the pancake went to the forest to hunt and to collect seeds and mushrooms, the sparrow wanted to fetch wood and chop it up and the little mouse tried to cook. When the pancake came home it was missing a bit of its fat side. He got in the way of Reineke Fuchs and he wanted to eat him. He barely escaped it, leaving behind a considerable part of himself. The little mouse scalded itself while boiling soup and lost its hair in the process, and the sparrow pecked at the wood so long to chop it up until it bent its beak.

At the end of the day everyone was very contrite and cried. The sparrow was ashamed and crept away. After returning to their original duties, they lived on peacefully.
