A discussion arises at George Mason High School about whether the book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an appropriate school reading. A small but noisy group of students and parents believe that the book is racist, sexist and immoral and should therefore be removed from the school library or the curriculum.

Barney Roth is the editor of the school newspaper. He disagrees and writes a story in the school newspaper about previous cases of censorship at his school. On the part of those in favor of removing the book from the curriculum, Kate is likeable.
