The old tower cock (original spelling : The old tower cock ) is a poem by Eduard Mörike . The starting line is Zu Cleversulzbach im Unterland . The poem reflects Mörike's experiences as a pastor in Cleversulzbach .

Emergence

The removal of the tower cock from the church tower of his parish in Cleversulzbach in 1840 was the occasion for Mörike to write the extensive poem. He expanded it in several stages until it was first published in 1852 in the art and entertainment journal for town and country with the subtitle Stilleben . The poem appeared for the second time in 1855 in Ludwig Richter's contemplative and edifying things with his woodcuts and the generic name Idylle .

shape

The poem consists of 17 stanzas of unequal length and 239 verses in rhyming pairs ; the odd number of verses is created by a triple rhyme in the sixth stanza. The language is deliberately popular and often uses non-literary and humorous vocabulary.

content

The thing poem is written from the perspective of the tower cock. He first reports on his previous role as a tower cock. This happens in the past tense, as the cock is now removed from the church tower and replaced with a new one. He comes to a farrier to be melted down, but is discovered by the pastor, who finally takes him to his rectory and places him on a stove, which is described in detail. From this perspective, the rooster reports on his new surroundings, his feelings and the pastor's life.
