content

The aging Don Domenico Clericuzio wants to bring his family's business, which is based on drug trafficking, gambling and murder, completely legal. His possible successors, his grandson Dante and great-nephew Cross (Croccifixio) De Lena , go completely different paths. While Dante shows more and more sadism and brutality, Cross runs a legal casino in Las Vegas and refuses a murder assignment. Cross tries to get into the film business, which only partially succeeds, but brings him together with a well-known actress. One day, Pippi De Lena , Cross' s father and military leader of the family, is murdered. Cross immediately suspects Dante , lures him and his accomplice into a trap and kills them without the Don's permission .

When the Don takes him over, Cross believes he is being punished for his arbitrariness. But when the Don tells that Dante was the child of an unhappy love between his now insane daughter and a member of a rival Mafia family murdered by Cross' father during a massacre, it becomes clear that the Don planned the events long in advance. He saw his plans to legalize family businesses endangered by the unbridled sadism of Dante’s .

review

In his review for the New York Times, Christopher Lehmann-Haupt systematically compared the novel with Puzo's best-known work The Godfather and found many similarities. So is Michael Corleone in The Godfather as Don driven by the desire to incorporate his family in the American community. He found the similarities in the opening scenes particularly striking, the framework of which is a family celebration in both books, which is then about business ("But the real point of the get-together is business."). One could even imagine that the characters are played by the actors from The Godfather (film) ("Best of all, you can picture the characters in The Last Don being played by the actors in the Godfather movies."). In summary, he found that Puzo with The Last Don a pretty decent sequel to The Godfather wrote ( "... he may in this case have created a decent sequel to The Godfather.").
