The dead sparrow is the title of a painting by Franz Marc (1880–1916). It is one of the painter's early works and is privately owned.

history

The picture was taken in 1905 at the time Franz Marc's relationship with Annette Simon von Eckardt was coming to an end. In the same year Marc met the Swiss animal painter Jean-Bloé Niestlé , who encouraged him to artistically implement his good relationship with animals. This is how Marc came to understand and further develop animal painting as a means of artistic expression, which became of great importance especially for his works at the beginning of the 1910s.

Bernhard Koehler , who later became Marc's patron, bought the picture on his first visit to the painter in January 1910 and thus laid the foundation for his extensive Marc collection. According to Elisabeth Erdmann-Macke , Marc was very attached to the picture. When Koehler asked if the picture was for sale, Marc initially said no. After Koehler had bid 100 marks , Marc, who had money problems, parted with the picture after a difficult internal struggle.
