Dermal punch is a form of body modification similar to piercing , whereby larger parts of the connective tissue or cartilage are punched out up to eight millimeters, similar to a hole punch . This method is mainly used to be able to insert larger jewelry in the ear cartilage, as it is very difficult to stretch . Compared to piercing, there is usually more blood loss. The healing process is much faster and less complicated, as the punched out part corresponds exactly to the diameter of the piece of jewelry and therefore less pressure is exerted than is often the case with piercing, especially with larger diameters.

The hole in the nose or in the auricle that was created during punching cannot regress because the cartilage is not reproduced by the body. It is only possible to reduce the size of the canal using regrowing skin tissue.
