Desmond Choo

Desmond Choo Pey Ching (* 1978 ) is a Singaporean politician and Deputy Secretary General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC).

Life

Choo was tutored at Ai Tong School, Catholic High School and National Junior College before receiving an overseas merit scholarship from the Singapore Police Force to study economics at the University of Chicago .

Choo began his career with the Singapore Police Force, where he worked for 13 years in a variety of roles including Commander of the Woodlands Neighborhood Police Center, Head of the Special Investigation Section and Deputy Commander of the Clementi Police Division. He also served as the Deputy Department of Labor, where he was the deputy director of the Foreign Policy Department and assisted as a bodyguard in the swearing-in of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and other new cabinet ministers at Istana on August 12, 2004.

Choo left the Singapore Police Force to join the NTUC in 2010. After initially serving as Deputy Director of the NTUC's Youth Development Department, he later became Deputy Director of the Labor Relations Department. Previously, he was also the Executive Secretary of the Union of Security Employees and the Singapore Shell Employees Union.

After working in the private sector at Kestrel Capital Pte Ltd , an investment firm, in 2013, Desmond rejoined the NTUC in April 2014 and is now Deputy Secretary General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC).

He is also director of NTUC's youth development department and director of industry transformation and productivity. He is committed to the needs of young workers and helps workers navigate restructuring and take advantage of the new job opportunities highlighted on the Industry Transformation Maps. He is also Executive Secretary to the Union of Telecoms Employees of Singapore and Young NTUC.

As a member of the country's ruling People's Party ( PAP ), he is currently the mayor of the northeastern district of Singapore. He has been a Member of Parliament (MP) since 2015 and represents the Tampines GRC in Tampines Changkat. He was sworn in as mayor of the North East CDC on May 24, 2017.
