The German-Maltese Society (DMG) is a registered, non-profit association founded on June 10, 1991 with headquarters in Adenau . The company operates nationwide and, according to its own statements, is non-partisan and non-denominational. It intends to promote and help shape the cultural, social and societal relations between Germany and Malta .

history

At the end of the 1980s, the then and current ambassador of the Republic of Malta, Albert Friggieri , and the then mayor of the Johanniter town of Adenau, Bernd Schiffarth, had the idea of ​​establishing a German-Maltese society. The DMG was founded in June 1991 at the suggestion of the then Ambassador of the Republic of Malta, Richard Lapira. The founding president was the then city mayor of Adenau, who held this office for 17 years. Christian Launer, Cologne, has been President since 2008.

tasks

The company pursues charitable purposes. All holders of club offices are volunteers. The current Maltese ambassador and one knight each from the Order of St. John and one from the Order of Malta are also members of the Presidium. The main focuses of the work in the sense of the association's purpose are:

  • The promotion of German-Maltese relations.
  • The promotion of youth work. (Support for class trips and study trips, support for Maltese students to complete internships in Germany)
  • To develop the cultural, societal and social relationships between the two countries. This serves u. a. support in the initiation of city and school partnerships.
  • To support European activities in the interest of a democratic and free Europe with special consideration of the German-Maltese friendship.
  • Organization of exhibitions of Maltese artists in Germany.
  • Special emphasis on German-Maltese relations during multilateral meetings.

cooperation

There is close cooperation in particular with the German-Maltese Circle, with which joint exhibitions, concerts, trips and meetings are organized in both countries. Furthermore, according to the association, there is intensive contact with the embassies of both countries and Maltese consulates in Bremen, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Magdeburg, Munich and Stuttgart, the Order of Malta and the Order of St. John, the Malta Center Bremen, the German-Maltese Medical Society, to the Protestant Andreas parish and the Catholic St. Barbara parish (both German-speaking), the philately of the sovereign Order of Knights of Malta e. V, the Historical Society of the Maltese City of Heitersheim e. V., the Mirow Church Tower Association e. V., the EifelArt e. V., the German-Hungarian Society e. V. and the Friendship Society Malta Austria.

Members

The DMG currently has around 165 members. Any natural or legal person who is committed to their goals can become a member. The members of the German-Maltese Society come mainly from all over Germany and from Malta. Once a year, a member trip offers the opportunity to exchange ideas, information and experiences. It leads to regions in Germany and abroad, which often have a current or historical connection to the Order of Malta or St. John.

The DMG publishes a circular four times a year, which informs the members about projects as well as current topics, events and dates "around Malta". It is the actual platform for the presentation of the company's activities.
