The relations between Germany and Libya are bilateral relations between the Central European state Germany and the North African state Libya. Germany is represented in Libya with an embassy in Tripoli (currently closed) and a diplomatic office in Benghazi , while Libya has an embassy in Berlin (currently closed). Relations between these countries were tense after a bomb attack in the late 1980s, but have since improved through ever closer cooperation, particularly in economic matters. However, during the Libyan civil war in 2011, Germany politically joined the National Transitional Council, which it recognized as the legitimate Libyan government after breaking off relations with the regime of Muammar Gaddafi.
