The German Society for Social Psychiatry e. V. (DGSP) is a nationwide association of reform forces in psychosocial care. It was founded in 1970 and is a supraregional member organization of the German Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband (DPWV) . Its almost 2,000 members (as of the end of 2013) come from all professional groups in psychosocial work.

The DGSP understands psychological suffering in a social context in the sense of social psychiatry . The aim of the DGSP is to offer help that meets the needs of people with mental health problems: Community integrative help should take the place of psychiatric institutions, and psychiatric help is to be organized and offered in a person-centered manner, regardless of the institutions providing care, to meet the needs of those affected. The DGSP promotes these goals through nationwide congresses and through the publication of the specialist journal »Soziale Psychiatrie«, furthermore through a range of short, medium and long-term social psychiatric training.

In addition, the DGSP takes a position on health policy or psychiatric policy developments and contributes its opinion in expert hearings. The DGSP has regional associations in almost all federal states.

Technical committees:

  • Education, training and further education
  • Children and young people
  • psychotherapy
  • research
  • People in homes
  • Assisted living in families / family care (BWF)
  • Addiction
  • Work and employment
  • Working group care

The DGSP also offers advice to teams, sponsors and authorities in planning and setting up socio-psychiatric models.

Since 1979 the DGSP has been researching the involvement of German psychiatry in the “euthanasia” campaigns of the National Socialists, the T4 campaign and the Brandt campaign . She advocates improving poverty reporting and against modern forms of devaluing human life in the debate on euthanasia and the protection of human rights and human dignity with regard to the application of biology, medicine and biomedicine. As part of a three-year project, the DGSP promotes and networks independent and “trialogical” complaint offices with the aim of establishing user-oriented quality assurance in the community.
