The German Society for Linguistics e.V. (DGfS) is a scientific society founded in 1978 whose purpose is to promote linguistics in Germany, including the promotion of young linguists and international cooperation in the field of linguistics. The company is based in Düsseldorf .

In contrast to language associations or lay-oriented language associations , an academic profession in the field of linguistics is a prerequisite for the status of full member at DGfS. The DGfS thus also functions as a professional association for German linguists.

The work of the DGfS does not serve a specific individual language, but includes general linguistics as well as the linguistics within the various individual philologies (such as classical philology, German studies, English studies, Romance studies, Slavic studies, etc.). Since 1988 the linguistic sub-discipline of computational linguistics, which has grown significantly in importance, has had its own section within the DGfS.

The DGfS publishes the Zeitschrift für Sprachwissenschaft (ZS) in Verlag Walter de Gruyter . The content of this journal has been published in a freely accessible manner since 2017 ( Open Access ).

Once a year, the DGfS awards the Wilhelm von Humboldt Prize for Linguistics to linguists who represent linguistics in a particularly exemplary manner. The prize is awarded for the best young linguistic work and honors doctoral theses that make significant contributions to linguistic research in terms of method, theory or content. The Wilhelm von Humboldt Prize for Lifetime Achievement is also awarded to linguists who have made particular contributions to the interests of linguistics.
