The German war cemetery Baltijsk , formerly war cemetery in North Mole Pillau in East Prussia , was in the final months of World War II cemetery for 7,452 dead soldiers and civilians. Since 1997, a further 12,255 war dead have been transferred from the area of ​​the Fresh Spit to the war cemetery. These include 204 dead from the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff .

Baltijsk is at the end of State Road 193. Because of the restricted military area, the route leads over the town hall to the Nordermole car park. From there there is a footpath through the dunes. Access is only possible with the help of a special permit, which must be applied for at least one week in advance and which is checked at the barrier.

Acts of war

The soldiers fell in what was then Samland between January and April 1945 when the Red Army advanced against the soldiers of the Wehrmacht. Heavy losses resulted in the attempt to keep Pillau open as a haven to the west for civilians and the military.

In the center of the cemetery there is high crosses. The cemetery is located in an overgrown dune landscape. The names of 5238 dead are recorded on steles. The cemetery was dedicated on August 20, 2000. It had already been created at the beginning of 1945 for civilian war casualties and for soldiers who had died while transporting the wounded. Austrians, Poles, French, Russians, Czechs, Hungarians, Dutch, Italians, Romanians and other citizens are also buried here.
