The German Midwife Association ( DHV ) is the largest German professional association for midwives and obstetricians . The association represents the interests of all midwives: freelance and employed midwives, teachers of midwifery, family midwives and midwifery students. According to its own information, the association had over 19,000 members in 2017.

The association has 16 regional associations. In addition to professional representation, the DHV offers further training for midwives. These are prescribed at regular intervals for midwives in Germany. However, the DHV is not a union and is therefore not allowed to negotiate collective bargaining for full-time midwives. The service union ver.di (Department 03 - Health, Social Services, Welfare and Churches) is usually responsible for the tariffs in the hospitals .

history

In 1885 the first midwifery association in Germany was founded by Rosina Neumann and Olga Gebauer . Neumann worked as a freelance midwife and called for the first meeting of Berlin midwives. At that time, 300 midwives founded the first modern midwifery association.

1933 - after the takeover of the NS regime - was created as part of the DC circuit of professional organizations the professional organization "Reich Fachschaft German midwife", which was dissolved 1945th

Since October 2008, the former Association of German Midwives has been called 'Deutscher Hebammenverband eV' The reason for the name change was that the Association of midwives of all nationalities and cultures would like to be open and see itself responsible for families of all nationalities.

Political work

With its "Midwife Protest" campaign, the association advocates a better social and legal position for obstetrics in Germany. He complains that the lack of fee increases for years threatened the existence of freelance midwives. Many are forced to give up. As a result, local care for women during pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium is at risk. The situation for midwives in the hospital has also worsened: midwives have to look after several pregnant women in the delivery room at the same time.

After midwives organized at the DHV in Berlin in May 2012 raised awareness of their situation with a demonstration, the then Federal Minister of Health Daniel Bahr announced that they would provide better support to freelance midwives. He called on the health insurance companies to take the midwives' situation better into account in future negotiations.

media

The DHV has been publishing the Midwives Forum as a member magazine since 2000 . The monthly magazine contains both specialist articles and association news, as well as country-specific and nationwide training dates, conference and congress dates and job advertisements.
